Earlier this year, designer Alison Glass released her line of shot cotton solids, Kaleidoscope. I had the privilege of exploring these saturated colours in a second version of Our Song, Your Reflection. The result was a blazing sunset on a contrasting cool colour palette for the water. This quilt is all about texture, texture, and more texture. Get the pattern here.

A shot cotton is a woven fabric which uses one colour for the threads of the warp and another colour for the weft. Depending on how the light catches the fabric, the colour appears differently. This particular line of shot cottons — aptly named Kaleidoscope — range from solid-looking to quite textured. The subtle shifts in colour add so much to the lone star design.

So as to not use both the white (“Daisy”) in both the swan and its reflection, I inserted some Alison Glass Mariner Cloth for the reflection to “muddy” up the reflection. It adds more variation in texture. I really admire the way Alison Glass as a designer explores different substrates and weaving methods to bring us sewists a new way of looking at what we create.

The backing for this quilt is yet another fabric designed by Alison Glass, from her garment specific line “Adorn.” It’s a cotton lawn – very soft and delicate. I love the reverse border print and sliced it in half and inserted a sampling of Kaleidoscope shot cottons to widen it.

The binding is made up of small swatches of the warm palette from the top half of the quilt and the cool palette from the bottom half. I used the Mariner Cloth for the rest of the binding as well, all in the name of texture! I often see wonderful uses of striped fabric for binding and this woven stripe brings that idea to a whole new level.

This is spectacular … the colors and design just sing together and make beautiful music! My daughter’s community has a lake and this year the homeowner’s association introduced two pairs of swans; the grandgirls have been completely captivated by the four waterfowl! I’ll be watching for when the pattern is released — what a fun quilt this would make for them to capture their summer memories! 🙂
Oh, what a beautiful thing to add to the lake! Here’s the actual song about the quilt: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gZ32d38q4wI
