This week, I am hosting a social media hop for Patchwork Lab: Gemology. With a little help from my friends, we’re showing you the possibilities of the patterns from the book and extending them in our own creative ways!
First up, the nine gemstone shapes. These different gemstones can be scaled into 4 different sized blocks: 6″, 12″, 18″ and 24″. So many possibilities! Starts with the easiest, progressing towards the most intricate.
Top row: Round, Heart, Trilliant. Middle row: Radiant, Cushion, Princess. Bottom row: Teardrop, Marquise, Oval.

Next, Sheri from Whole Circle Studio puts the foundation paper pieced gems alongside her “Typecast” English paper pieced letters. She explains in depth what the difference is between the two processes. Read all about it on her blog!

Laura and Gar are the masterminds behind PreQuilt, an online app that helps you visualize your quilts before you embark on making them. They have created a colouring page for the Round Cut block from the book. Try your hand at colouring the gemstone from the library of digital fabric swatches!

Cristy from Love You Sew shows us how to integrate the Cushion Cut gemstone block into a purse pattern. This is her Colleen Tote pattern featuring a striking fuchsia gemstone. Read about the process of making it here; her photos are so stunning!

Rebecca @restitcherator is in the process of making a gift for her mom, whose birthstone is November’s topaz! It’s going to be a stunner!

On to the second part of the Gemology social media hop!
