FABRIC JEWELRY Workshop with DESIGNWITH
On May 3, 2023, I am co-hosting a workshop on making fabric jewelry with your scraps! There are some special scraps that hold significance for us — a piece from a quilt you made for your first baby, something from your grandma’s stash, or a souvenir fabric from a special trip. How about if you got to wear those?
What’s so special about this workshop? The method of making was developed as a collaboration between the women of the Regent Park Sewing Collective – located in Toronto – and the designers at DESIGNwith. All proceeds go to fund the continuing wages of the women of the Regent Park Sewing Collective and their work with DESIGNWith.
Regent Park is a vibrant but traditionally underserved community of Toronto. I’m volunteering my time to co-host and promote this workshop because I believe in supporting other women and alternate ways for them to support their families. DESIGNwith is looking for skills that exist within the community members, partner with them, and to capitalize on that expertise in order for them to become more economically sustainable. The Sewing Collective is one of those areas of skill! This will be their first time running a virtual workshop and they will be building on their teaching skills that they’ve developed in person and transfer that to online teaching.
Skill level: confident beginners and intermediate sewists. If you’ve made at least one quilt and can hand-sew a teeny bit, this will be great for you! . There is some fabric piecing and prep, supply gathering to be done beforehand and that info goes out with registration. Our time during the workshop will be focused on hand-sewing and connecting with one another.
What if I can’t make the date? Recording of tutorial sections of the workshop will be available for 2 weeks after the event, so you can learn on your own after the event date.
I will be learning alongside all of you! I hope to make a few of these necklaces to sell for future fundraising events for my local quilting guild. I hope to see you there!
P.S. I did a Q&A with Tara Evans of Tara Lee Quiltery over on Instagram about the workshop! Catch it here.
